Interior design expert Celia Alida Rutte recently assisted a Rosedale resident with the design and installation of custom built in cabinetry. Although the homeowner had already comfortably settled into the space, and the general interior décor was complete, she was unhappy with the existing open shelf design in both her living room and bedroom.

The shelves in the living room were too deep to be considered book or display shelves; adding accessories that adequately filled the void only made the shelves look cluttered. The open shelf concept in the bedroom was not much better; it did not compliment the elegant, sophisticated look of the home or make good use of the space.

In the living room, we designed the top part of the new cabinet to store and hide away the homeowner’s collection of non-essential vases and decorative accessories. The middle and lower section of the new cabinet was allocated to the wine storage and concealed bar—bar complete with a backsplash mirror and adjustable shelves. We replicated the existing wall trim design on the cabinet doors to maintain a consistent style and seamless look, and sourced cabinetry handles that complimented the existing handles in the adjoining kitchen.

In the new bedroom built ins we made concealed storage for purses and clothing items, and designed the mid-section to function as a display shelf and nightstand. We also added an additional pull out shelf to allow more room for the bedside essentials. The cabinet doors were custom made to match an existing set of drawers on the opposite side of the room.

When the homeowner came home from her vacation she sent us an email to let us know how happy she was with the exquisite cabinetry work; and in a follow up meeting to wrap up the project she praised our meticulous attention to detail and service.
